The Power of Volunteering
Sarah Berry is a young person that has really benefited from volunteering.
“Volunteering with Active Stirling helped me build my communication skills and confidence. It gave me a great opportunity to gain experience and understanding of different sports and how to coach them.”
“It also allowed me the chance to work with children of all different ages and abilities. Volunteering for Active Stirling was so effective in showing me that sport is the career path for me. As a volunteer with Active Stirling my efforts always felt valued and I felt as though I was part of a team. I constantly received feedback on what I was doing well and wat I needed to work on. For me one of the most valuable parts of my volunteering experience was working with the more qualified coaches. It allowed me to see different approaches to coaching, and new ideas for drills. It also introduced me to so many new people who all had similar interests to myself with similar career ideas and ambitions.”
My time as a volunteer has been invaluable to my life and work; I have developed both my communication and adaptability skills. I have learnt how to be vocal in meetings and express my point of view whilst building on others’ ideas. I have needed to problem solve when issues have arisen and work to time constraints. Being a volunteer at Active Stirling has given me an appreciation of how the company works and how effective the staffs need to be to achieve objectives. I would recommend Active Stirling for an excellent volunteer experience.
Olivia (Working group volunteer)
“I have volunteered for nearly a year now, and I really enjoy it. I volunteer because it gives me an opportunity to teach kids dance. I have really grown my confidence since becoming a volunteer with Active Stirling, as it gave me the opportunity to coach in a number of different sports, but mainly the one I love which is Dance. Teaching kids that might not be able to go to an out of school club is very rewarding and seeing the smiles on children’s faces when they love it, is very touching. As before starting this I lacked in these things such as confidence, I have definitely improved on my teaching ability as I'm much more encouraging which is what you need to be whilst being in this role”
